At Shear Studios, we love exploring the evolution of hair fashion. During the Revolutionary War, soldiers sported distinctive hairstyles like pigtails, queues, and wigs, each serving both practical and formal purposes. Hair queues, powdered flour braids tied with black ribbons, were common among soldiers for their neatness and discipline. For example, George Washington used pomatum and powder for his iconic style.

Soldiers of different ranks wore these styles, including the elaborate macaroni wigs favored by higher-ranking officers. These wigs were adorned with large, decorative elements, symbolizing status and fashion. Wigs, especially campaign wigs, offered formality and status, essential for military decorum. These men, from various ranks, played pivotal roles in securing the freedoms we celebrate on the Fourth of July.

Women of the 1770s also had their own unique and elaborate hairstyles. They often wore towering hairstyles supported by pads, wigs, and structures made of wire and fabric. These grand styles were decorated with feathers, ribbons, and even miniature ships or gardens, symbolizing their social status and fashion acumen. Creating these hairstyles required hours of work and considerable skill, similar to the dedication we see in hair fashion today.

These intricate hairstyles not only represented the beauty standards of the time but also reflected the social and political climate. Women, much like men, used their hair as a form of expression and power.

By looking back at these historical styles, we appreciate the artistry and innovation that define hair fashion today. At Shear Studios, we honor these traditions while embracing contemporary trends, ensuring every client feels both fashionable and respected.

Join us in celebrating not only our nation’s independence but also the legacy of those who have served and the rich history of hair fashion. From all of us at Shear Studios, happy Fourth of July!
